Is Game of Thrones on tonight?

For the last seven weeks, HBO has aired a new episode of Game of Thrones every Sunday at 8:00 p.m. EST. Is the show on again tonight?

No it is not. In the past, each season of Game of Thrones has lasted for 10 episodes, but this year, they cut it down to seven. Why? To hear the showrunners tell it, season 7 is only part one of a giant-sized final superseason. Season 8 is only six episodes long, so after it’s come out, it may be more accurate to treat the final 13 episodes as one huge season with a break in between.

And how long will that break be? We don’t know for sure yet, but it could be a very long while — people from within HBO have hinted that we may not get new episodes until 2019. Filming on season 8 is set to start in October, meaning that the period between filming and release would be extremely long. On the plus side, that means the final product should be pretty spectacular.

But as to the question at hand: no, there is no new episode of Game of Thrones tonight. We weep with you.
