WiC Live: How do you become an extra on Game of Thrones?
Every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. CST, we head to the Winter is Coming Facebook page to talk about the latest goings-on in the world of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire on WiC Live, our chat show. This week, we tackled a special topic: how do you become an extra on Game of Thrones, and what is the experience like once you’ve done it?
This is a question we get asked with surprising frequency here at WiC, and while we don’t have any direct connection to the HBO casting department (sorry), we can at least offer some guidance.
We also talk a little about HBO confirming the 2019 debut of season 8 (sad) and assess how the show did at the Golden Globes (bad). Roll the tape:
So to summarize: being an extra on Game of Thrones is tricky and limited to those who are in the right place at the right time, but it is possible. There are months of filming to go on season 8, so act now!
Meanwhile, Josh Hill and I dig into a pair of chapters from A Game of Thrones: Eddard IV and Tyrion III, analyzing them in a most literary and learned fashion. Also, is it weird that George R.R. Martin compares the wind to a sexual partner? Let’s discuss.
Breaking down the Song of Ice and Fire series chapter by chapter is a lot of fun, although I’m looking forward to getting to some of the later books. I’ve read each of the novels multiple times, but Josh has only ever watched the show. I’m wondering how he’ll respond to the unfamiliar territory in A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.
We’ll be back this Wednesday with more Thrones-y goodness. Hope to see you there!
