Tobias Menzies on whether Edmure Tully will return for Game of Thrones season 8

When we last saw Edmure Tully on Game of Thrones season 6, Jaime Lannister had intimidated him into helping the Lannsiters take back the castle of Riverrun for the Freys. After that, he assumedly went back to being Walder Frey’s prisoner, and fans have wondered if we would ever get resolution on his character. Now that Arya has obliterated the Frey male line, is Edmure free?

Actor Tobias Menzies talked to Digital Spy about Edmure’s prospects:

The honest answer is, I have no idea. He’s obviously somewhere in a prison, he’s still around alive somewhere. They’re pretty stingy with their information and I’ve not heard anything from them. I feel like they have so many stories to tie up, whether that’s a story they’ll want to go back to, I don’t know.

There are only a few months left of filming on season 8 to go, so if HBO hasn’t contacted Menzies yet, it’s probably not going to happen. It’s basically the same situation Ellie Kendrick (Meera Reed) was in. Nothing’s impossible, but we may have seen the last of these characters.

But Menzies isn’t hurting. He’s out and about doing press for his new show, The Terror, AMC’s fictionalized retelling of the Franklin expedition, a doomed attempt to navigate the last unexplored section of the Northwest Passage. Menzies plays Captain James Fitzjames alongside fellow Game of Thrones alum Ciarán Hinds (Mance Rayder).

So far, the show is getting favorable reviews. The Terror airs tonight!
