Who’s going to die in Game of Thrones season 8? Odds on every character

Tyrion Lannister

It’s the final season of Game of Thrones, and I’m sure that at least a couple major characters (by which I mean characters who have played big roles consistently since the start of the series) will die. Considering this show’s reputation, anything less would be a disappointment. But I don’t think Tyrion Lannister will be one of them.

For one thing, he’s unlikely to be in the line of fire. Jon Snow, the Hound, Brienne, even Jaime…all of them will want to be on the front lines of the coming war between the living and the dead, which puts them at increased risk. Tyrion can fight, but he’ll be the first to tell you that it’s not his area of expertise. And unlike in season 2, there are plenty of qualified people around him who can take up the mantle of military leader, so he’ll probably stay behind the scenes, planning and organizing. He won’t be safe, mind you — he’ll still be way too close to an army of zombies for comfort — but he’ll be safer.

I also think that Tyrion could be of best use to the season as one of the survivors. As Game of Thrones wraps up, it’ll need to take a moment to pull back and give viewers perspective on everything that’s happened. Tyrion, a naturally contemplative man who always keeps the bigger picture in mind, is perfect for that. What other character has both the narrative weight and the god-given eloquence to deliver a believable speech summing everything up? The writers can use Tyrion to help bring the series to a meaningful end, but he’ll have to be, y’know, alive for that to work.

Chance of death: 25%
