Who’s going to die in Game of Thrones season 8? Odds on every character

Rhaegal

For much of the series, Rhaegal shared the title of second fiddle with his now-dead brother Viserion. While Drogon got to do all the exciting stuff — rescue Dany from the Sons of the Harpy, burn Lannisters to a crisp on the battlefield, etc — Rhaegal and Viserion were often relegated to the background, although they did get to set that one guy on fire and eat him in season 5.

So where does Rhaegal stand now that Viserion has been murdered by the Night King? Dany’s dragons have always served as something of a get-out-of-jail free card for her, something to quickly balance the scales when she’s in dire need. What could be more dire than the threat of the Night King and his army, and what better way to drive home the seriousness of the threat he represents than to take away Dany’s safety blanket?

But ultimately, I think whether Rhaegal survives comes down to what George R.R. Martin intends for a post-Night King Westeros. We could get an ending where magic is reborn into the world, with the dragons as its standard-bearers. In that case, I say Rhaegal survives.

Alternatively, after the Great War is over, we could have a world where dragons, White Walkers, and all things magic fade into the background, which I think is the angle Martin is going for. The ending is “bittersweet,” after all. Sorry Rhaegal.

Chance of death: 75%
