It’s official: HBO is making a Game of Thrones prequel series. Well, it’s making a pilot, but you know the internal pressure to turn it into a full series is extreme. There’s a lot of money at stake here.

The pilot in question was written by Jane Goldman, the screenwriter behind movies like StardustKingsman: The Secret Service, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Here’s the official synopsis:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.

The Age of Heroes is one of the oldest periods in George R.R. Martin’s invented history. But as exciting as the series sounds, there’s a lot we don’t know. For example, what’s the title? Let’s look at some options:

Age of Heroes

Simple enough, right?

I like this option because it allows for a lot of space to play. By the sound of it, this show will be primarily concerned with the Long Night, which marked the first war between the living — including both the First Men and the Children of the Forest — and the White Walkers with their undead hordes. But the Age of Heroes had a lot more going on, what with figures like Lann the Clever and Bran the Builder running around, not to mention whatever was going on in Essos. Which brings us to…

East and West

Again, we’re going for breadth of subject matter here. Like Game of Thrones, this series will examine events on both of the Known World’s major continents. Based on the synopsis’ note about the show exploring “the mysteries of the East,” we may be in for visits to exotic locales like Asshai by the Shadow and the Golden Empire of Yi Ti. We also may see what the Andals were up to before they invaded Westeros, the event that marked the end of the Age of Heroes. Let’s have a title that encompasses all of those stories.
