History’s Vikings to end with season 6, spinoff in the works
Vikings,?History’s blood-drenched drama,?will end its run after its sixth season,?according to Deadline. Premiering in 2013, Vikings follows (or followed) the adventures of much-debated historical figure Ragnar Lodbrok (Travis Fimmel) as he leads the Norwegian people into new lands ripe for plunder. The show is currently in the middle of airing its fifth season, although filming on the sixth has just been completed. The final 20 episodes will kick off sometime this fall.
Deadline also reports that an “offshoot” series that will “continue the Vikings saga” is in early development. The gods are pleased.?Details on the successor show are sparse, but we know it will be written by Vikings creator Michael Hirst, with feature film writer Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive) coming on board as well.
The show?has grown as its come along. Vikings?season 1 had only nine episodes, seasons 2 and 3 had 10, and ever since then History has delivered 20 episodes per season. By the end, there will be 89 episodes, all of them written by Hirst. That’s nearly 100 hours of blood-soaked carnage with a spinoff on the way after that. With critical opinion of the show slipping, this seems like the right time to get out and start fresh. To Valhalla!
