1. Middle-earth by J.R.R. Tolkien

No list of excellent fantasy maps is complete without J.R.R Tolkien’s spectacular, masterful Middle-earth. In writing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings — as well as every other story in his Legendarium — Tolkien created the cornerstone epic fantasy world to which all others are compared.

Middle-earth is a genre-defining world. If not for Tolkien, we wouldn?t have some of the greatest fantasy properties in the world today. Or at least, none of them would quite be the same.

One simple Google search will bring up thousands of elegant interpretations of Middle-earth maps. My personal favorite is this interactive map from LOTRProject.com. It takes the history of Middle-earth, including every step of our character’s journeys, and condenses it all into one single map. Given the sweeping lore and eventful story, creating a map such as this is no easy feat.

So far, The Lord of the Rings has been adapted into video games, comics, tabletop games, and movies. Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy is considered one of the greatest of all time. Soon, Amazon will give us a new version of Middle-earth in a spectacularly expensive TV show. Middle-earth is super lucrative; anything set there is almost guaranteed to recoup the money.
