Will there be an Avatar 3? (Release date and more)

After more than a decade, the sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar has finally arrived. Avatar: The Way of Water is a three-hour epic that explores the oceans of Pandora, complete with astounding visuals and a moving story about family. Yet unlike the first movie in the series, The Way of Water leaves off with a few big cliffhangers that set up a follow-up.

If you’ve just seen the movie, you may be wondering if more adventures on the alien moon of Pandora await. And will you have to wait another decade to see them?

We have good news on both of those fronts: Avatar 3 is coming, and provided the release date doesn’t shuffle too much, it’ll be out sooner rather than later. Here’s everything we know.

Will there be an Avatar 3?

There are a number of reasons that it took nearly 13 years for Avatar 2 to come out following the monumental success of the first movie, including the need to create new technology to film its extensive underwater sequences as well as Cameron’s own reluctance to return to filmmaking after his own deep sea adventures.

Avatar 3 will be a totally different story. Cameron and his team filmed Avatar 2, 3, and the beginning of Avatar 4 all at the same time. This means that unlike the second movie, we are definitely won’t be waiting another decade for Avatar 3; it’s already been shot, and now begins the extensive VFX work of bringing Pandora to life.

What is the Avatar 3 release date?

As of this writing, Avatar 3 is slated for a December 20, 2024 release. While the second movie was repeatedly delayed, it’s much less likely that will be the case for Avatar 3. Since the movie has already been filmed, there’s good reason to be optimistic that it will actually release in 2024.

What is the title of Avatar 3?

While Cameron and 20th Century Studios have yet to make an official announcement about the title of Avatar 3, a 2018 report from the BBC may have already spilled the beans. According to documents the BBC reportedly saw, Avatar 3 will be titled Avatar: The Seed Bearer. The fourth film will be Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and the fifth Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.

These titles are obviously subject to change and we can’t consider them final until getting some kind of announcement from the studio. But if it sticks, Avatar: The Seed Bearer will continue the story from where The Way of Water left off, with Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and their family integrated into the Mekayina reef tribe of Na’vi.

Avatar: The Seed Bearer is due out in theaters on December 20, 2024. We’ll be keeping a close eye out for details as the date nears.
