House of the Dragon season 2 isn’t coming in January 2023
Hard to believe, but 2022 is behind us. For fans of Game of Thrones, it will live on as the year that finally brought us the debut season of House of the Dragon, HBO’s first spinoff set in Westeros. Taking place nearly 200 years before Thrones, the new show follows various members of House Targaryen as they vie for power, harbor grudges, orchestrate coups, and fly their dragons about the realm.
Season 1 ended with a big cliffhanger as Lucerys Velaryon was murdered by his uncle Aemond Targaryen over the skies of the Baratheon castle of Storm’s End. The final shot of the season shows Rhaenyra receiving this dire news before glaring furiously into the camera. Readers of George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood will know that she gets her revenge.
But it’ll be a minute before we see that vengeance play out on screen. Let’s go over the latest news about House of the Dragon season 2.

House of the Dragon season 2 release date
It should come as no surprise that House of the Dragon season 2 will not be coming out in January of 2023. Given the gargantuan size of the production and its numerous special effects-driven sequences, it’ll take some time for HBO to put together the follow-up to its new hit series.
However, the information about House of the Dragon season 2 is starting to pile up. For starters, we know for certain that it won’t be coming out in 2023 at all, but that a 2024 release is likely, according to HBO exec Casey Bloys. We also know that the production is reportedly set to begin filming season 2 this March. And thanks to another interview, this one with Aemond Targaryen actor Ewan Mitchell, we know that House of the Dragon season 2 will film for “eight months [in 2023].” That means we can expect filming to wrap sometime in the late fall or early winter.
As for the state of the production right now, writer Sara Hess recently revealed that the writers were hard at work on the season 2 finale. So despite the fact that House of the Dragon season 2 isn’t coming out for a while yet, it sounds like things are moving along well.
In the meantime, there’s always room for a rewatch. House of the Dragon season 1 is available to watch on HBO Max or on home video.
