Emilia Clarke wins a EWwy!
Sure, it’s not quite an Emmy (unless you’re an odd strain of dyslexic who somehow reads “w” as “m”), but it’s still something cool!
Emilia Clarke, our very own khaleesi, took home the top prize for Best Supporting Actress in Entertainment Weekly’s online awards poll, beating out a slew of other worthy actresses. You can read all about it HERE.
Clarke garnered 25.22% of the vote; Sara Ramirez of Grey’s Anatomy received 21.28%; Mae Whitman of Parenthood received 20.07%; Regina King of Southland received 12.21%; KaDee Strickland of Private Practice received 12.19%; and Maggie Siff of the highly-touted Sons of Anarchy won 9.03% of the vote.
Granted, “EWwy,” is kinda offputting. Or as @Ank1Aggarwal said on Twitter, “The last thing she is is EWwy. Emilia should have gotten a Yummy.”
Just so!
Now keep in mind, in order to be nominated for an EWwy you cannot be nominated for an Emmy. Game of Thrones (Dramatic Series) and Peter Dinklage (Supporting Actor) were not even in the running. But the EWwy Awards are also the fans’ ways of rectifying Emmy omissions; Sean Bean, robbed of an Emmy nod, was nominated for a Best Actor EWwy. (He finished behind Nathan Fillion of Castle and John Noble of Fringe.) So in a sense, the EWwy is a consolation prize—or the NIT of entertainment awards tournaments.
But hey, it’s always good to get love and respect from the voting public.
Fire And Blood: Congrats to a well-deserving Emilia Clarke! What’s most interesting to note is she was the only actress from a science fiction / fantasy show to be nominated and still ran away with the prize; double surprising, knowing what a gigantic following Gray’s Anatomy has. This was a great win for her.
NOTE: The actual Emmy Awards will be broadcast live this Sunday at 8:00pm EST (5:00pm PST) on FOX. I’ll be tuning in to root for Peter Dinklage (Supporting Actor), David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Writing), Tim Van Patten (Directing), and Game of Thrones in general (Drama Series). I will be Live Tweeting the event from the comfort of my own living room, so follow me @Axechucker if you want to!
Or, unfollow me if that sort of thing annoys you! I may be giving a running fashion commentary. You’ve been warned!
