Character Overview: Maester Luwin is a trusted advisor to the Stark family. Recent Events: When Catelyn’s sister Lysa Arryn sends word that the Lannisters are responsible for the death of her husband Jon Arryn, whose job as Hand of the King is now being offered to Ned Stark, Maester Luwin counsels Ned to take the job in order to discover the truth behind Jon Arryn’s death. He tends to Bran’s injuries after his paralyzing fall from the top of a tower, and advises both Robb and Bran in their duties as the Princes of Winterfell until Robb departs to take up arms against the Lannisters in response to Ned Stark’s imprisonment. Luwin soon receives Sansa’s letter pleading Robb to stand down for the sake of his sisters’ safety; he quickly identifies Cersei as the true mastermind of the letter.
After Robb leaves, Luwin continues to counsel Bran, as he is now the Prince of Winterfell while Robb is away. Bran asks him about magic, to which Luwin gives his honest answer according to the teachings of the Citadel. When Theon Greyjoy seizes Winterfell for himself, Luwin attempts to calm the hot-headed Iron Islander, but fails. He ultimately hides out with Bran, Rickon, Jojen and Meera Reed, the wildling woman Osha, and Hodor, until the Greyjoys and Boltons have completely ransacked the keep. He then sends this company northward for their own safety, while he chooses to remain in the North.
