Game of Thrones lands single Golden Globe nomination

The nominations just keep on coming, as the Golden Globes announced their finalists todayGame of Thrones landed its first nomination in a few years for Best TV Drama, where it’ll be competing against Downton Abbey, House of Cards, The Good Wife, and The AffairThrones was oddly snubbed in all four of the TV Drama acting categories, however.

At this point in a normal article, we’d start discussing Game of Thrones‘ chances and perhaps why it landed just one nomination. But that’s all kinda pointless when dealing with the Golden Globes…

The Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a group notorious for prioritizing star power over quality (and that’s the nice version). Particularly since Sean Bean left, Game of Thrones has lacked movie star power–although Dormer and Harington may be changing this–preferring instead to have, well, really good actors. That’s not good enough for the HFPA, who prefer to reward movie stars doing TV, like Don Cheadle (Best Actor in a Comedy Series for House of Lies in 2012) or Robin Wright (Best  Actress in a Drama Series for House of Cards in 2013 against a murderer’s row of sensational performances).

Game of Thrones might win that Best TV Drama award–it’s a very popular series, after all–but I’d still wager on House of Cards as a perfect movie star vehicle. But win or lose, it’s not a referendum on GoT’s quality.

On the plus side, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting the ceremony again this year–it airs on January 11th on NBC.
