See how Game of Thrones dragons Balerion and Drogon match up to Smaug
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies hit theaters this past week, and in that movie, the fate of the dragon Smaug, is played out. Back in September of this year, some very enterprising fans crafted a very cool Dragon Chart, which compares Smaug to other popular dragons, including Game of Thrones’ dragons, Balerion and Drogon.
The chart comes from GB Posters Blog, and of course, as with any fantasy debate, this chart’s accuracy is up for some discussion, but you have to admit, it’s pretty cool. Check it out.
Dragon Size Chart
As you can see, Smaug is decidedly smaller than Balerion. Balerion the Black Dread was named for his fire which was described as being as black as his scales. He was the largest of all the Targaryen dragons. Balerion’s teeth were as long as swords and his jaw was big enough to swallow and entire mammoth, whole. His wingspan was so vast, that entire towns would fall under his shadow, as he passed overhead. Aegon the Conqueror rode Balerion, during his conquest of Westeros. If this chart is even remotely accurate, the idea of Balerion’s size is just mind-blowing.
Now, I’m not sure about Drogon’s size comparison, to that of Smaug. The chart has Dany’s black dragon, which many think is Balerion reborn, larger than Smaug. If you remember how large Drogon was in Season 4 of Game of Thrones, he still wasn’t as large as Smaug in the Hobbit 2.
There is a much more accurate dragon comparison chart from The Daily Dot, which shows how Drogon and his siblings are around 61m compared to that of Smaug who is 60m. The eye test apparently counts for nothing.

This just goes to show how little I really know about the size of dragons. What do you think, is Smaug actually smaller than Drogon? Let’s talk about it, in the comments below.
