Casting news: Maggy the Frog

Back in October, we told you about D.B. Weiss and David Benioff announcing that Season 5 of Game of Thrones would have its first ever flashback scene. And, earlier this month, a new actress joined the Game of Thrones cast, specifically for that flashback. Now it seems the flashback has another key piece, as Jodhi May (Strike Back) has taken a role in Season 5.

Find out who she is after the jump, with some mild spoilers

Jodhi May in Last of the Mohicans

A source over at Watchers on the Wall has confirmed Jodhi’s role as Maggy the Frog. Jodhi May also played the part of Alice Munro in 1992’s Last of the Mohicans…a personal favorite of mine.

Maggy the Frog was a fortune teller in Lannisport during Cersei Lannister’s youth. Her description in the books is as an old crone archetype with crusty yellow eyes, no teeth, short of height and wart covered.

If the producers of Game of Thrones want to be true to the books, then they will have their hands full turning the beautiful Jodhi May into an old and bent crone.

However, in my opinion, Maggy doesn’t necessarily have to be old and ugly for Cersei’s flashback to hit the mark. As long as the Prophecy of the Valonqar is told I’ll be a happy camper.

Jodhi May isn’t the only casting news today, as WotW’s source also has Isabella Steinbarth joining the cast as young Cersei’s friend, in that flashback. Isabella’s casting agency, the Buttercup Agency, has confirmed her being cast in Season 5, as well.

Isabella Steinbarth

“Already with a string of film credits behind her is featured in Episode 1 of Season 5 ‘Game of Thrones’ for HBO. Isabella was also cast as Princess Louise-Francoise in the film and period drama ‘A Little Chaos’. Cast by Nina Gold and Directed by Alan Rickman.”

The context of Cersei’s flashback scene has been the center of much debate, but if these two actresses are cast as Maggy the Frog and young Cersei’s friend, then my assumption is that we will definitely get to see the Prophecy of the Valonqar. The possibility that Game of Thrones will cover such a central part of Cersei’s story is very exciting.

It’s also worth noting that this may be the first notification we’ve had of when Cersei’s flashback will be taking place. Looks like it’s the season premiere.
