More on Malta

An article at the Times of Malta about the purported damage to the natural site in Dwerja also gives us a list of possible filming locations in Malta.

The permit also covered filming to be carried out in eight additional natural and cultural sites, namely Mdina, Fort Ricasoli, Fort St. Elmo, San Anton Palace and Gardens, Verdala Palace, Fort St. Angelo, Fort Manoel, Cittadella and Rdum id-Delli.

Some of the locations we had already reported on, such as Mdina’s streets doubling as the streets of King’s Landing, and the Fort Ricasoli gates being used for the Red Keep’s gates. One other Mdina location that reportedly was used, is the Mdina Gate (pictured right) which doubled as the King’s Gate. However, there are some new locations listed.

We have some inside info about what they may have been filming at some of these locations. San Anton Palace, which is actually the residence of the President of Malta, was used for parts of the Red Keep. Verdala Palace, which is the President’s summer residence, supposedly doubled as Illyrio’s manse. Fort St. Angelo was also used for Red Keep scenes (specifically the scenes of Arya chasing cats). Fort Manoel was the location of Baelor’s sept, used in that “pivotal scene.” Another location used that is not on that list is the St. Dominic monastery in Rabat, which was where they shot the meeting of Ned and Cersei in the Red Keep godswood.

And lastly, the scenes that have yet to be filmed, the ones the production is hoping to film in Mtahleb, those would be Dany’s final scenes.

UPDATE: The production has apologized for any damage caused by the cleanup in Dwerja. The damage was caused by a sub-contracting company that did not follow the terms of the agreement. As soon as the production found out about this, they put a stop to it and began the manual clean-up. They regret the mistake and have said they have had nothing but positive experiences while filming in Malta.
