Designing Season 5: Set Design
We’re officially four weeks away from the start of Game of Thrones Season Five. Earlier this month, the blog Making Game of Thrones brought up a video taking us behind the design process of the show’s weaponry. This week, they’ve released part two of the Artisan Design series, taking us behind the scenes for the set design process.
Check out the video, which is heavy on the new locations for Season 5, below!
It’s interesting that they chose the Osuna Bullring for what it lacked more than for what it provided. I had thought originally they might have used it because it was a historic location, but it turns out, they loved it more than anything because there was nothing to cover up. It was, in producer Deborah Riley’s words “a blank palette.”
I also note that she talks about the need to work in a 360 degree fashion in order to completely immerse the viewer in the world of the show. That seems to have been one of the major things about using the Alacazar of Seville, other than the ease in which the production could lock it down so that Dorne was kept as much under wraps as possible. By using the palace in this manner, they can 100% turn it into Dorne, with no distractions. The more I see of Dorne, the more excited I get to go visit when the season starts.
