Game of Thrones: Season 5 Preview Video

Yesterday, HBO released a preview video of Game of Thrones Season 5. There’s a part of this that plays a bit like a remix of the first two Game of Thrones trailers from back in January and last week. But there are a couple of new scenes contained in it as well, which are very exciting.

Check it out below.

This preview concentrates on what might arguably have been the strongest part of the first trailer: Varys’ speech to Tyrion that culminates with the “Who said anything about ‘Him’?” line. Having this be the main focus gives the sense that the overarching plot of the season is the focus of taking Tyrion and having him head towards Meereen and finally Dany to the ongoing plotting in King’s Landing. Note that the opening shot is actually not Tyrion or Varys, but is in fact the shot of Dany and her group being menaced by the Sons of the Harpy in Daznak’s Pit from the second trailer.

Of course, it’s never that simple in Game of Thrones, is it? Most of the footage we’ve seen before but this…

What is this? It looks like Meereenese slaves reaching toward Dany, as we’ve seen before, but …the hair? The hair is…well, it’s Emilia Clarke’s actual hair, sans wig, actually, but that’s neither here nor there. The question is WHY? It’s not like they shot a scene where they forgot her wig. So–is she dreaming? Is she undercover? What exactly is going on here?

This is the big new scene for me, and not just because I’m slightly obsessed with Dorne. The fact is, this is the first time we’ve seen Doran Martell in a trailer. Both the first and second US ones were devoid of him. And I think the reason for that is this is also the first clear shot that he is wheelchair bound. Up until now, all we’ve seen of him have been promotional stills, in which those who do not know the books could easily be fooled into thinking he’s just sitting on a Dornish throne of some kind.

Note also this shot is most of the Martell clan as well–The Sand Snakes standing in a row, Areo, and Ellria, perhaps kneeling as she arrives to tell Doran that his younger brother Oberyn is dead?

Is this Jaime vs Areo Hotah? It looks like the outfit we’ve seen Hotah wearing, but I’m not sure it’s broad enough in the shoulders to be him.

I had to lighten this still in order to get a good look at it. It’s Dany going down to check on her babies, who she locked away, and by their fiery greeting they are very angry at their mother for treating them this way. As they should be. Not only is she treating them so terribly some one should call the MSPCA on her (That’s the Meereenese Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), but apparently locking away her dragons included locking away her fashion sense. Seriously, this is the worst outfit we’ve seen Dany wear–ever! It’s shoulders-less with a built in cape, so it looks overly heavy and clumsy, plus it’s tea length so it ends awkwardly. Not to mention the keyhole large enough to pilot a small army of Unsullied through. Good dragon, burn the ugly dress!
