Animated History: The Doom of Valyria
Making Game of Thrones continues their countdown to Season 5 by pulling up one of my favorite videos from the blu-ray sets. As a book reader who nerds out over back stories and world building, the Histories and Lore animations are the reason I buy the blu-ray sets instead of the DVDs every year. Though these tidbits and geeky facts never make it on screen in the show, I love that anyone who takes the season home can delve into these pieces that fill in the full color of Westerosi History.
The MGoT site has been pulling lots of historical fill-in videos from the DVDs out as part of their countdown, including a reminder of who the Unsullied are, trial by combat—which we all learned quite a bit about last season with Oberyn Martell—and Arya’s water dancing skills. But when you’re looking to a season where the Dragons you’ve known from hatchlings are finally becoming full adults, you should know their history and how it relates to The Doom of Valyria.
Check out the video below.
The video is narrated (in case you don’t recognize the voice) by Harry Lloyd, who played the late Viserys Targaryen, otherwise known as The Beggar King, in Season 1. It was originally released as part of the Season 1 blu-ray box set.
