George R.R. Martin gives survival tips for the zombie apocalypse

The Walking Dead will have its season finale this Sunday, and of course, everyone seems to be chiming in on how Rick and the group of survivors will make it through the Season 5 finale. Game of Thrones creator and author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin, has some thoughts on how to survive a zombie outbreak.

See what George has to say, after the break.

Our good friends over at Undead Walking, picked up on an article that Martin had with Entertainment Weekly, in which the Bearded Bard gave his two cents on survival in a world where the undead walk the earth.

“Castles! Whatever is happening in the United States during The Walking Dead, I’m sure they’re a lot better off in England because they’re in castles. If they had any brains, they’d go to the existing castles and reinforce the walls. They can patrol on the bulwarks. No way is a zombie [getting through]—medieval seige armies couldn’t break castles with conventional artillery, and zombies don’t use artillery. Zombies don’t build trebuchets. They don’t build siege towers. There is no way they can break into a well-defended castle.”

I wonder if Riverrun is impervious to zombies? You know…in case Lady Stoneheart leads the Brotherhood Without Banners into the castle to exact revenge on the Freys, in what will be known as the Red Wedding 2.0, but I digress.

Seems like George may have taken a page from Max Brook’s book, World War Z, where certain parts of humanity come together in a couple of castles, to hold off the zombie hordes. But he’s totally right, a castle is the first place I would look for.

Question: Is it acceptable to ask one’s spouse to move to Europe for their abundance of castles, in case of a zombie apocalypse? Asking for a friend.
