George R.R. Martin, HBO go back in time for Captain Cosmos
George R.R. Martin is going back in time! The A Song of Ice and Fire author signed a deal with HBO to develop new shows for the network two years ago, and now one of those projects is close to reaching fruition.
Captain Cosmos will focus on the life of a sci-fi television writer in 1949, the dawn of the first Golden Era of the young medium. The pilot is being written by Syfy’s Z Nation writer Michael Cassutt, who previously worked with Martin on Beauty and the Beast and The Twilight Zone. As a longtime TV guy, this show seems right up Martin’s alley, though hopefully it isn’t too big a drain on Martin’s time. He’s already scaling back his convention appearances to work on The Winds of Winter and chose not to pen an episode of Season 5 or Season 6 in order to devote more time to the book (and to The World of Ice and Fire, which finally saw release late last year). This particular era in literary history also seems like fertile ground for a quality television series, which is the business HBO is in, for the most part.
