Jorah Mormont

Game of Thrones

Let’s face it: Jorah Mormont should already be dead. Ned Stark wanted to execute him for selling slaves, so he fled to Essos. Sworn some time after to the ever-stubborn Daenerys Targaryen, he survived the Red Waste, the treacherous lords and warlocks of Qarth, and numerous near-suicidal commando raids with Daario Naharis. After Daenerys’ discovery of his former work for the spymaster Varys, Jorah managed to make it through multiple banishments into the wilderness. Along the way, he effectuated a drunken kidnapping of Tyrion Lannister, contracted greyscale, got captured by slavers, spent time in the fighting pits of Meereen, and lived through an ambush by the Sons of the Harpy.

There you have it. Jorah is the energizer bunny of absorbing abuse. But we all know what keeps this guy ticking. He loves Daenerys. He loves her with with an all encompassing, unnervingly pure kind of love. As Jorah says to Daenerys in Season 6: “I love you. I will always love you.”

Jorah has made mistakes, yes, but he isn’t a bad guy. He’s a dishonored knight seeking redemption, a brave man who has saved Daenerys’ life many times. And now, just as Jorah has managed to reconcile with Daenerys, she has ordered him to leave her again, although this time she is demanding he find a cure for the deadly greyscale that afflicts him.

Do we expect Jorah to vanish into the Essos sunset never to be seen again? Nothing’s for certain, but that isn’t the way the bunny works, and we expect him to return for Season 7.

But will Jorah make it through the year alive? We know there’s a cure for greyscale out there: Stannis Baratheon scoured the known world and found someone who had the ability to stall the progress of the disease in his daughter Shireen. Yet is seems impossible that Jorah could find it in time. Jorah needs to get lucky, and luck is not his strong suit.

But then again, look at what he’s already managed to live through.

Chance of surviving: 30%
