Dickon, Talla, and Melessa Tarly

Tarly family dinner Official sam gilly randyll

Life in the Tarly house must be strange. Patriarch Randyll Tarly is a narrow-minded tyrant, but although his cruelty scarred Sam for life, it seems almost not to have touched the other members of the family. You’ve got mother Melessa and daughter Talla, both of whom are all nurturing warmth. And then there’s favorite son Dickon, an amiable blockhead with none of his father’s malice. Yeah, he seems a little dumb, but that’s not a crime. Excepting Sam, somehow this family unit seems to work, and I hope it isn’t torn down in Season 7.

I don’t think it will be. I can see encountering Randyll again—maybe he’ll come to the Citadel looking for the sword Sam took, maybe he’ll fight the Lannisters under orders from Olenna Tyrell, or maybe he’ll do something else. But I don’t see the need to bring the likes of Melessa and Talla into it. In fact, if we return to Horn Hill, I’ll fear it’s just so we can watch it be bombarded by enemy forces, whether from King’s Landing or Pyke, and I don’t want that for the people who embraced Sam and his new family with open arms.

So stay offscreen, Tarlys. Stay offscreen until this whole White Walker business blows over. And then visit Sam, wherever he is by that point. He’ll make a far better patriarch than Randyll.

Chance of Survival: 90%
