11. Jaime frees Tyrion (“The Children”)

KATIE: Tyrion’s Season 4 arc is one bleak turn of events after another. While fans may not have believed for a moment that the show would actually kill such a fan favorite character (the internet will probably burn itself down if Tyrion perishes), it was hard to watch him suffer, accused of a crime he didn’t commit and persecuted by members of his own family. It’s true that he’d never gotten along famously with his relations, but being sentenced to death by his own father was a whole new ballgame.

Upon the eve of his execution, all hope seems lost (so it goes upon the eves of most executions). Enter Jaime, knight in slightly tarnished armor, with some classic heist movie dialogue:

TYRION: “Oh, get on with it, you son of a whore.”

JAIME: “Is that any way to speak about our mother?”

Cue Game of Thrones procuring the rights to “This Is How We Do It” for the soundtrack, because I cannot be the only one who started singing it immediately after this exchange.

But seriously, folks, Jaime’s decision to spring Tyrion from prison is a heartwarming moment of brotherly love. Tywin preferred to point out his children’s inadequacies, Jaime and Cersei’s relationship is based on lust and manipulation, and Cersei and Tyrion just hate each other. Jaime and Tyrion, meanwhile, understand and sympathize with one another.

After Tyrion killed Tywin, Jaime’s opinion changed. Last we heard, he was planning to cut his little brother’s throat. But their bond might still whether this storm.
