Dave Bautista joins the cast of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie
Actor, wrestler, mixed martial artist, and goatee enthusiast Dave Bautista (Drax from?Guardians of the Galaxy)?is reuniting with?Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve for Legendary’s movie adaptation of Frank Herbert’s?Dune, which is quite possibly the best science fiction story ever written. As Deadline reports, Bautista’s role hasn’t been divulged, but if I had to guess, based on his build,?he looks like a good fit for?Glossu “the Beast” Rabban Harkonnen. And indeed, that’s who?The Hollywood Reporter?says he’s playing.
Bautista will join?Timoth?e Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name),?who’s playing lead character Paul Atreides, and?Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible ? Fallout), who’s playing the Lady Jessica. This lot is in it for at least two movies, since Villeneuve’s first film?which will only cover the first half of the first Dune book.
According to JoBlo, Villeneuve has a vision for his Dune:?”Star Wars for adults.”
Most of the main ideas of Star Wars are coming from Dune so it?s going to be a challenge to [tackle] this. The ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw. In a way, it?s Star Wars for adults. We?ll see.
He’s not wrong that there’s a lot of crossover between Dune?and?Star Wars.?The planet of Dune is much like Tatooine. The?Bene Gesserit order is like the Jedi Order, and both epic stories take place in galaxies far, far away, either in the distant past (Star Wars) or the far future (Dune).
Dune takes place?tens of thousands of years in the future, when man has explored and colonized several planets throughout the known galaxy and beyond. There are several noble?houses set up on their own planets, all of them competing for the Emperor’s favor and to control the trade of Melange (Spice). Spice is created by gigantic sandworms on the planet of Arrakis (Dune), and is the most valuable commodity in the known universe. It extends a person?s life, gives them heightened senses and can even unlock prescient powers in some.
But before all that, you can (probably) see Bautista on the big screen in?Avengers: Endgame, which hits theaters on April 26.
