We’ll probably see more of Dorne in Game of Thrones Season 6
Although we’re not yet through Season 5 of Game of Thrones, some (okay—me) are dangerously close to writing off the plotline currently underway down in Dorne as a failed experiment. The Sand Snakes, who were so hyped in advance of the season premiere, have come off as glorified action figures, while the recent skirmish between them and Jaime Lannister at the Water Garden asked the audience to accept a whole lot of improbable coincidences, and was poorly choreographed to boot.
As implied above, there’s still time for the show to salvage this plotline. I hope that happens sooner rather than later, as it looks like we’ll be returning to Dorne for Game of Thrones‘ sixth season. Jordi Bosch, the chairman of Endemol, one of the show’s production partners in Spain, recently said during an interview on Spain’s RAC1 that the show would like likely shoot some scenes for Season 6 in the northeastern Spanish city of Girona, which is home to about 100,000 people. Locations in Spain—specifically around the cities of Osuna and Seville—have stood in for Dorne this season, so it’s assumed that a return to Spain means a return to Dorne. Based on these images, Girona certainly looks like the sort of place that could double for somewhere in Dorne, what with the mountains in the background and the colorful buildings.

So far, all we’ve seen of Dorne has been the Water Gardens and the Dornish countryside, so perhaps Girona could double for a more urban area like Sunspear or the Planky Town. It’s also possible that Girona won’t stand in for Dorne at all—just because the show is filming in Spain doesn’t necessarily mean it’s filming scenes in Dorne. After all, the show’s presence in the country has been good for tourism, so the government has an interest in keeping it around. While the images above do indicate that the city would be a good fit for Dorne, I can also see it standing in a place like Braavos, or one of the other Free Cities.
