Final Season 5 Episode Titles and Synopsis Released

And here I thought we would have to wait for Monday afternoon after episode 8 aired to get this information, like we had to last time. But no. With all the gossip and rumors running about this week, HBO has gone ahead and released the titles and synopses for the final two episodes of this season of Game of Thrones.

As far as Episode 9 goes…well, we were pretty sure we already knew the title, so that won’t be a surprise. Episode 10 however…let’s just say everyone was wrong (this is why you can’t trust IMDb).

SPOILERS AHOY!

Episode #49: “The Dance of Dragons”

Debut: SUNDAY, JUNE 7 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)

Stannis (Stephen Dillane) confronts a troubling decision. Jon (Kit Harington) returns to The Wall. Mace (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) visits the Iron Bank. Arya (Maisie Williams) encounters someone from her past. Dany (Emilia Clarke) reluctantly oversees a traditional celebration of athleticism.

Well, well, well. Turns out that leak from TV Guide over the weekend was indeed mostly on the money, “celebration of athleticism” and all! I like the extra detail there, including that Dany is reluctantly overseeing it. We can assume that Stannis’ troubling decision is going to involve Shireen, Arya’s run in is with Ser Meryn Trant, and Jon returning to the Wall will be…tense, considering all those side eye looks he got when he left.

As for the finale…

Episode #50: “Mother’s Mercy” (season finale)

Debut: SUNDAY, JUNE 14 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Stannis marches. Dany is surrounded by strangers. Cersei (Lena Headey) seeks forgiveness. Jon is challenged.

Mother’s Mercy. Mercy on Stannis for the decision he made to be able to march? Mercy on Dany, who (if the books are any guide) will have flown away from Meereen on the back of Drogon, and has to start again, back on the Great Grass Sea? (Surrounded by strangers, a new Khalasar?) Cersei seeks forgiveness can mean only one thing—her Walk of Shame is in this episode. As for Jon being challenged…Will the “For The Watch” moment from the books be the finale cliffhanger of the season? If so, may the Mother have mercy on us all.
