Scientists Determine Game of Thrones Characters’ Memorability

(Please note: This post contains no spoilers from last night. Proceed in safety!)

Who do you consider to be the most memorable character in Game of Thrones? Was it Noble Ned, who’s death shook reader and TV viewers to the core? Is it Dany and her dragon brood? Tyrion and his endless talking? MIT scientists sat down and decided to see if they could scientifically determine who on the show was the most memorable.

There’s just one thing—they didn’t use the plot. Instead, they determined memorability “by feeding photos of the characters into software that can determine a “memorability score” based on people’s abilities to remember them in a memory test.”

Margaery

So, basically they determined who was the most visually memorable character, based on face, make up, costume, hair, etc.

The results aren’t all that surprising.

1. Daenerys Targaryen – 0.942
2. Margaery Tyrell – 0.907
3. Tywin Lannister – 0.881
4. Jaime Lannister – 0.878
5. Cersei Lannister – 0.878
6. Bronn – 0.878
7. Sansa Stark – 0.87
8. Jon Snow – 0.861
9. Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark – 0.861
10. Gregor Clegane – 0.822
11. Tyrion Lannister – 0.815
12. Joffrey Baratheon – 0.725

So the one in the silver wig with all the insane brain work, the stand out costumes and to-die-for necklaces is the most memorable character in the show, when measured by visual standards? Not surprising in the slightest. Meanwhile, someone like Stannis, who is neither attractive nor has much in the way of costumes other than his muted armor, doesn’t make the list. Shocked, I tell you.

Cersei won’t be pleased to see she is outranked by Margaery, but that’s to be expected—much like Dany, her wigs and costumes stand out, especially her wedding gowns. I am amused that Jaime and Cersei, as twins, have the same ranking, but then Bronn has the same one too, so that sort of mars it a bit. The real headscratcher on the list is the Mountain—mostly because my question is “Which one?”

And Arya doesn’t even make the list? You know nothing MIT scientists.
