Game of Thrones Announces New Costume Designer

As we noted last week in her interview with Fashionista, Michele Clapton, who has been the lead costume designer for Game of Thrones since it began back in 2011, has left the show. After five years in Westeros, it was time to move on. But not to worry—the beautiful designs we see every year (especially for weddings) are in good hands. Over the weekend, the production announced that Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner April Ferry will be coming on board for Season 6.

Though Clapton said that she felt like she’d visited everywhere in Westeros and Essos and had set down the template to follow for every region, the showrunners feel there’s still quite a ways to go with two (or maybe three) seasons left. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporterthey said:

“There is so much left to do on the costume front, so many changes left for the characters and ground for them to cover, and we’re so grateful to have someone as brilliant as April on board to create the costumes that tell the story’s final chapters.”

Ferry’s career spans four decades, from 1979’s The Jerk through to the just released Jurassic World. In 1995 she was nominated for the Oscar for Best Costume for her work on the Mel Gibson movie Maverick. She won the Emmy for Best Costume in 2006 for HBO’s Rome, which was known as HBO’s most expensive and lavish production ever undertaken, prior to Game of Thrones. She also won the BAFTA in 2009 for The Edge of Love. In 2014, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Film and Television from the Costume Designers Guild. We look forward to seeing her designs for Westeros and Essos in the season to come.
