25. The Daenerys Cosplay Look

It’s a rare day that Game of Thrones gets to make fun of itself. Part of making the high fantasy concept work is a lack of winking or fourth wall breaking. The show must take itself very seriously or we the audience won’t. Even the few times the show has made references to other fantasy productions—such as the Valyrian who recited the Frenchman’s insults from Monty Python—they’ve been subtle enough that they haven’t pulled the viewer out of the moment.

So when this season introduced us to a prostitute decked out in full-on Daenerys Targaryen cosplay, from the bad wig to the riding boots to the blue dress she wore for much of Season 3 and 4 (albeit a bit more backless than usual), it was a striking moment, and a chance for the show to poke just a little bit of fun at itself without going overboard. It also gave Dany cosplayers around the world a moment to congratulate themselves on pulling off their looks better than that.
