as Old Nan
Character Overview: Old Nan is the oldest person living at Winterfell. She is a former loyal servant and retainer who is effectively retired. However, she still tells stories and legends to the Stark children. She is the ancestor of Hodor, although the relationship between them is unclear. – Wikia
Recent Events: Old Nan remains at Winterfell after Ned Stark departs for King’s Landing to serve as Hand of the King. She keeps Bran company after his paralyzing fall from a tall tower, telling him the story of the Long Night and the winter that lasted a generation. This is Bran’s earliest exposure to the wights, whom he will face in the course of his adventure. Due to the actress’s passing in between filming the first and second seasons, Old Nan similarly passes away, presumably shortly after Ned Stark’s beheading.
Actor Bio: Margaret John was a Welsh actress, trained at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She was seen mostly on television, with credits including Dixon of Dock Green, The First Lady, Z Cars, Doctor Who (in the 1968 serial Fury from the Deep and the 2006 episode The Idiot’s Lantern), Menace, Blake’s 7, Secret Army, The District Nurse, Lovejoy, My Family, High Hopes, and, on radio, Linda Smith’s A Brief History of Timewasting. More recently John appeared on television in The Mighty Boosh and as the frank librarian in Little Britain. She was perhaps most famous, however, for her role as Doris, the surprisingly blunt and sensual elderly neighbour of Gwen and Nessa, in the cult BBC TV series Gavin and Stacey. At the 18th BAFTA Cymru Film, Television and Interactive Media Awards in 2009, in a ceremony hosted by Gethin Jones (Renly Baratheon), Margaret John was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Sadly, the revered actress passed away in February 2011, at the age of 83.
