as Tyrion Lannister
Character Overview: Tyrion Lannister is Tywin Lannister’s third child, a misshapen dwarf nicknamed “The Imp” and “Halfman”. Though Tyrion shares his father’s talent for political maneuvering, he receives little respect from Tywin because of his deformity, sharp tongue, penchant for whoring, and the death of his mother during his birth. He is capable of cruelty to his enemies, but also has great sympathy for fellow outcasts and the mistreated. – Wikipedia
Recent Events: Tyrion accompanies his family to Winterfell when Robert Baratheon attempts to recruit Ned as his new Hand of the King. Afterward, he joins Jon Snow on his journey to the Wall, partially to find out how things are going, partly to stand “on the edge of the world”. Returning to King’s Landing, he is captured by Catelyn Stark and her bannermen and taken to the Eyrie to stand trial for ordering an assassination on the paralyzed Bran Stark in Winterfell. Tyrion talks his way out by asking for trial by combat; a sellsword named Bronn champions for him, and he readily wins. Returning from the Eyrie, the two men strike an agreement both with each other and with the mountain clans that live in the vicinity of the Eyrie. Tyrion takes this unlikely band of soldiers to his father, Tywin, who is now waging war with Robb Stark in the wake of Ned Stark’s sudden beheading.
Tywin orders Tyrion back to King’s Landing to serve as Hand of the King in his stead. Tyrion does so, but defies his father’s wishes and brings his new lady-friend, a prostitute named Shae who had been traveling with Tywin’s company, back to the capitol with him. Tyrion’s primary concern in King’s Landing at first is to reign in his sister Cersei, whom he distrusts, and his nephew Joffrey, whom he despises. He also begins preparing the city’s defenses in advance of Stannis Baratheon’s attack, which takes place on Blackwater Bay. Tyrion is wounded during the Battle of Blackwater Bay, obtaining a scar that permanently mars his face. (In the books, this injury is more severe; Tyrion loses part of his nose.)
With Tywin back in King’s Landing, Tyrion takes the post of Master of Coin (as Petyr Baelish, the previous Master of Coin, serves in another capacity away from the capitol). He fears for Shae’s safety and eventual discovery, particularly as Cersei came close to discovering her prior to Blackwater Bay (Cersei mistook the prostitute Ros for Tyrion’s mistress; Tyrion plays along to keep Ros alive and his own secrets hidden). His old enmities with his father return as well, particularly when Tywin orders Tyrion to marry Sansa Stark in order to solidify the crown’s hold on the Northern lands. The marriage is an unhappy one, as Sansa is more prisoner than guest after the beheading of her father, and Tyrion is too concerned with other matters (and too different, particularly given his short stature) to be able to provide Sansa with what she truly desires. In spite of this, and even though they are unable to consummate the marriage, the two develop an unsteady rapport that is almost immediately destroyed by the Red Wedding.
When King Joffrey is poisoned at his wedding to Margaery Tyrell, Tyrion is named as the primary suspect, and is put on trial. Believing the trial to be nothing more than a vicious act of punishment by his father and sister for things beyond his control, he calls again for trial by combat. Impressed with the dwarf’s resilience, and partially to fulfill an act of revenge Tywin Lannister ordered against his family, the Dornish diplomat Oberyn Martell agrees to be Tyrion’s champion. Unfortunately, this trial by combat goes poorly for Tyrion, as Oberyn’s opponent, Ser Gregor Clegane, also known as “The Mountain”, crushes Oberyn’s skull with his bare hands. Out of sympathy for his younger brother, Jaime Lannister, with the help of the eunuch Varys, helps Tyrion escape; during this escape, however, Tyrion breaks into his father’s bedchambers, where he finds Shae on the bed. In a fit of rage originating from a place of betrayal, Tyrion chokes Shae to death, then finds his father on the chamber-pot and shoots him dead with crossbow bolts. He is now sailing away from King’s Landing a fugitive, heading for parts unknown.
