Character Overview: Jon Umber is Lord of the House Umber in the North. He is is a large man, nearly seven feet tall, heavily muscled, and is a formidable warrior. Jon is proud, boisterous, and fierce, and impressed only by those who earn his respect. –AWOIAF
Recent Events: Greatjon Umber is among many called to arms by Robb Stark when Ned Stark is taken hostage by the Lannisters. He clashes with Robb over some of his leadership decisions, but ultimately rejects Baratheon leaders following the execution of Ned Stark and embraces Robb as the “King in the North”. The Greatjon continues to fight and win many battles for the Starks in the North. Because of his activities, he is not present at the Red Wedding, making him one of the few loyal Stark bannermen to remain alive in the wake of that event. For this reason, Rickon and Osha attempt to make their way to him on Bran’s orders, as Bran fears for the safety of Rickon during his long journey northward beyond the Wall.
Actor Bio: Mantle was born June 3, 1957 in Barnet, Hertfordshire. He was a chorister in St. John’s College Choir, Cambridge for four years, and a member of the National Youth Theatre for five years, appearing in a total of eleven productions. He trained at RADA and has worked steadily in films, plays and television, most notably in the cult 1980s fantasy series Robin of Sherwood, where, at 6’5 1/2″, he was cast as Little John. Mantle is also known for his role as general surgeon Mr. Mike Barrett in the TV series Casualty and later Holby City. He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1986 (1985 season) for Most Promising Newcomer for his performance in Of Mice and Men. In 2006 he guest starred in the Doctor Who audio drama “The Settling” by Big Finish Productions. – Superman Super Site
Following his appearance on Thrones, Mantle appeared in the second season episoder of Sherlock titled “The Hounds of Baskerville”. He continues to appear on television, including a minor role on the UK version of Shameless and voicing Gator in Thomas & Friends. –IMDb
