Recent Events: As the Lord of the Crossing, Walder Frey meets with Catelyn Stark at the Twins to discuss his alliance with the Starks and the immediate need for Robb Stark’s army to cross the River Trident to gain a tactical advantage against the Lannisters. Walder trades his allegiance and the crossing in exchange for Robb taking one of Frey’s daughters as a wife and one of his sons as a squire, as well as marriage promise for Arya. However, Robb breaks his promise to Walder Frey when he falls in love with, and eventually marries, a field nurse named Talisa. Walder subsequently and secretly allies himself with Tywin Lannister in a deal that benefits the Lannisters, the Freys, and the Boltons. Walder sends word that he is willing to renegotiate his allegiance in spite of Robb’s betrayal, asking instead for Catelyn’s brother Edmure to marry one of his daughters. At their wedding at the Twins, however, he imprisons Edmure and executes the Stark bannerman, as well as Catelyn and Robb Stark and Robb’s direwolf Grey Wind. For his part in the “Red Wedding”, Walder is granted control of Riverrun and protection from the remaining loyal Stark bannermen by Tywin Lannister.
