Character Overview: Jon Snow is the claimed bastard son of Eddard, by a mother whose identity is not widely known. Jon, who received the surname customarily assigned to illegitimate northerners, is of an age with Robb. He was sired during the War of the Usurper. Despite his wife Catelyn’s objections, Ned insisted on taking responsibility for the boy, and he grew up side-by-side with the trueborn Starks. Unlike the more usual experiences of illegitimate children, Jon lives with his father but has never met his mother, and indeed has no idea who she might be. –Wikipedia

Recent Events: As Eddard Stark is appointed Hand of the King to Robert Baratheon, Jon Snow departs for The Wall to become a member of the Night’s Watch, following the footsteps of his uncle Benjen Stark, First Ranger. He struggles to let go of his loyalties to House Stark, especially in the wake of Ned Stark’s beheading on the Sept of Baelor, but is spared from becoming a deserter by his fellow trainees, who have also become his friends (particularly Samwell Tarly). Together they swear the oath to the Night’s Watch and set off on a massive ranging north of the Wall, largely to investigate the mass exodus of wildlings. During this ranging, the Watch takes shelter at Crastor’s Keep; the titular Crastor is a harsh man who beds and brides his daughters while leaving his sons to die in the cold.

Soon, they encounter a small group of wildlings, including the red-haired Ygritte, whom Jon chooses to take prisoner instead of beheading. This sets the stage for a tragic romance. On the order of Jon’s superior during the ranging, Qhorin Halfhand, Jon defects to the wildlings under the rule of self-proclaimed King-beyond-the-Wall Mance Rayder, who is planning to “light the biggest fire the North has ever seen”. He is gathering the wildlings and other supernatural beasts and beings to march on the Wall as an initial strike against Westeros. Despite Jon’s feelings for Ygritte, he abandons the wildlings during a scouting trip and returns to the Night’s Watch to warn them of the impending attack.

Jon faces bureaucratic challenges from the main leaders of the Night’s Watch about the defenses of the Wall. Nonetheless, he leads a ranging to Crastor’s Keep to stop a group of deserters led by Karl Tanner. (Inadvertently, his half-brother Bran was taken captive by Tanner; Jon’s ranging has the added effect of providing Bran and his company an opportunity to escape.) Afterwards, Jon fights bravely against the wildlings and their twisted companions the Thenns in a huge battle at the Wall, ultimately holding back the wildling attack. During the fighting, however, Ygritte is mortally wounded.

After the battle, Jon treats with Mance Rayder in an attempt to stave off further bloodshed; however, they are soon interrupted by Stannis Baratheon and his army, who crush the remaining wildling forces and take Mance Rayder hostage. Jon meets with Stannis and introduces himself as Ned Stark’s son; Stannis, Davos, Melisandre, and their company subsequently settle in at the Wall, in pursuit of mutually beneficial courses of action.
