Quiet Night For Thrones at the Golden Globes
There may be lots of moments to talk about today from last night’s Golden Globes, but Game of Thrones won’t be one of them.
The fourth season of the show, despite continuing growth in both popularity and acclaim, had received only one nomination and, unsurprisingly, didn’t win it. (It was beaten by The Affair for Best TV Drama.) In fact, HBO in general was roundly snubbed. With the exception of a single award for Matt Bomer in The Normal Heart, the pay channel went home empty handed. Instead the awards focused on new hotness in the entertainment distribution field like Netflix and Amazon, and rewarded up-and-comer channels like the CW.
This wasn’t unexpected, though, as the Golden Globes are rather famous for being detached from quality, to put it mildly. But it was surprising to see so few Game of Thrones stars actually present at the show–to the point where a network actually made one up….
It was a disappointment, but clearly one that was not unexpected. Thrones cast attendance was thin on the ground, with the bowtie-clad Kit Harington and Pedro Pascal as the only cast members getting any photograph time prior to the ceremony. (Harington, above, is still clearly trying to find a way to look like he cut his hair without actually getting said haircut.)
At one point, perhaps desperate for some Game of Thrones faces, E! claimed they were giving camera time to Sophie Turner. But it turned out that was actually Shelby Steel, who stars in Showtime’s Shameless.
Turner herself took to twitter and agreed. That wasn’t her.
I’ve got an idea. Maybe next year, the Globes can actually give Game of Thrones more than a cursory nomination, and a chance and taking some hardware home, and then E! won’t have these problems.
