Deleted scenes from Season 4 revealed
Last week saw the exclusive Game of Thrones Season 4 DVD launch party in Quebec that included an amazing Ice Iron Throne. The DVDs themselves won’t hit the shelves (virtual or brick and mortar) for another nine days. But we’re in luck: a couple deleted scenes from the DVD extras have hit the web a week early.
The first scene was cut from Season 4 episode 2, “The Lion and The Rose.” It’s a short scene between Bronn and Shae directly after Tyrion dismisses her, as they head down to the ship to take her to Pentos.
The second scene was cut from Season 4 episode 8, “The Mountain and The Viper,” but no, it doesn’t give us extra Oberyn. Instead post-banishment of Jorah, Dany and Missandei have a short heart-to-heart.
Check them out below.
This scene plays funny–I can see why it was cut. The intention here seems to be to foreshadow Bronn’s decision down the line to choose a comfortable life over loyalty to Tyrion. But it feels odd. (“Hey, your lover just threw you away, so let’s talk about me!”) Also, it makes Bronn look a little two-faced when he tells Tyrion later in the episode that he did the right thing.
There are things I really like about this scene–like the shot of the city we don’t usually get. Yes, it is more obviously green screened than other Meereenese shots, but I assume they stopped cleaning it up once it was cut. This one feels like it was cut for time more than anything–after all, in an episode where everyone is waiting for the title card fight, a longer, drawn out quiet scene like this might hurt the pacing.
The Season 4 DVDs arrive February 17th.
