It’s Game of Thrones Season 4 DVD Release Day!
It’s finally here! The DVD/Bluray set of Game of Thrones arrives in US stores today. Yesterday in London, HBO displayed their second lifesized ice sculpture of the Iron Throne in Covent Gardens. (The first Ice Throne was displayed in Quebec a couple of weeks ago.)
With the release of the DVDs comes all the extras as well. Depending on where you buy/order your set from determines which bonus extras you get. (Being a costume geek myself, I’ll be getting my set from Target.)
More talk of the DVD extras below!
Though some DVDs contain certain bonus extras, all of the DVDs come with the following:
- Behind the Battle for the Wall – Follow the cast and crew as they create the most ambitious battle to date. This 30-minute documentary explores the challenges of putting together one of the series’ most intense episodes, with never-before-seen material.
- The Fallen: A Roundtable – Writer Bryan Cogman sits down with a few of the many cast members who meet their demise in Season 4. From first learning of their deaths to shooting their final scenes, this 30-minute feature will shed light on what it’s like to live-and die-in the Game of Thrones world.
- The Politics of Power: A Look Back at Season 3 – Revisit the brutal events of Season 3 to see power shifts that define Westeros at the start of Season 4.
- Bastards of Westeros – Hear showrunners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss and author George R.R. Martin discuss the role bastards play in the Seven Kingdoms.
- Deleted/Extended Scenes – Two deleted scenes.
- Audio Commentaries – Commentaries with cast and crew including showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Pedro Pascal, Aidan Gillen and more!
The blu-rays come with something beyond that: the Histories and Lore of Westeros. These are the illustrated back story pieces, many of them pulled from discarded portions of the books that couldn’t be filmed as part of the TV series, lest it ruin plot and pacing. These have always been my favorite part of the extras, and why I always get the blu-ray set.
Not to worry if you don’t have a blu-ray player–some have already found their way to YouTube. Some of the highlights include Pedro Pacal narrating a Brief History of Dorne, as well as his character’s specialty knowledge of poisons, while Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand gives a short lecture on being a bastard in Westeros. Mark Gatiss narrates a History of the Iron Bank from his character Tycho Nestoris’ point of view, and Anton Lesser, as Qyburn, talks about the chains of Maesters.
The Season 4 DVD/Blu-ray is on sale everywhere today.
