The WiC Scale: Winners and Losers for “Hardhome”

Welcome back to another installment of The WiC Scale. With fully half of the latest episode set north of the Wall in the doomed town of Hardhome, this is going to be something of a short list. We had a lot of characters taking this week off, with Teams Dorne and Stannis both offscreen, and most of the King’s Landing and Castle Black crews on leave. Let’s run the numbers and see which spoke on the wheel is where.

Up

Daenerys and Tyrion and wine--Official HBO

  • Tyrion: The Mouth of the South got clean clothes, a comfy chair, and a new job. He even has someone telling him to cut back on the wine. Everyone wins.
  • Dany: Finally, she has an adviser with the nerve to ask her the tough questions, including whether this whole “Conquer Westeros” obsession is in her best interest.
  • Arya: A cute new outfit, a trendy hipster hairstyle, and poison.
  • Sansa: When Sansa is the one in the episode receiving good news, you know things have gone topsy turvy.
  • The Army of the Dead: Wildlings Zero, Wights Double.

Middling

Sansa and Theon, or Reek or whatever, in Winterfell--Official HBO

  • Theon: The good news is that Sansa isn’t going to do to him what Ramsay did. The bad is that Ramsay will, when he finds out about Sansa’s good news.
  • Sam: Way to completely fail to understand Olly. We’ll chalk it up to the nervous morning after with Gilly giddies.
  • The Boltons: Facing a hell of a fight, and Ramsay isn’t even smart enough to win via siege. Roose might have to question if making the kid his heir was the right move after all.

Down

Cersei

  • Cersei: Reduced to drinking water off the floor. How long until she kneels to that barefoot peasant she put in power?
  • Jorah: Is he throwing himself in the pit in order to infect others with Greyscale? Or because he knows he’s a dead man anyway?
  • Jon: Seriously, why would you leave the dragonglass in the hut?!
  • Tormund: Watched his people get massacred, didn’t earn points at Wyndham Hotels.
  • Humanity: Reporting live from Hardhome…oh, the humanity.

S5 E8 The dead rise and Jon leaves

Out

Karsi the wildling at Hardhome--Official HBO

  • Karsi: We only new her for thirty minutes, and yet she won over fans everywhere. Her tragic end only endeared her to us more. It’s too bad that, if we ever meet her again, she’ll kill us all without a second though.
