Melisandre

Melisandre and Jon Snow Official

Melisandre could absolutely die in Game of Thrones Season 7. Last we saw her, Jon Snow had banished her from Winterfell to wander alone in a strange country. That’s dangerous, but I don’t think it’s her time to go.

For one thing, I doubt she’ll be wandering alone for long. Fan speculation has her running into the Brotherhood Without Banners, who are making their way north. That makes a lot of narrative sense, since it would give the writers an opportunity to pair Melisandre with Thoros of Myr, another Red Priest. Even now, six seasons into the show, we know precious little about the Lord of Light’s religion, and I would relish some conversations between these two.

It would also give Melisandre some focus. With some new companions at her side, she could return to the fight against the White Walkers with renewed vigor, even if Jon Snow won’t accept her assistance. (And it’s possible he’ll see the light on that, pun completely intended.) Melisandre’s knowledge is deep, and it would be foolish for someone not to make use of it.

That brings me to my final point: Melisandre is just too interesting to kill off at this point in the story. The show specializes in morally ambiguous characters, and a character who can burn a child alive and still come off as kind of sympathetic is a character I want to know better. I can see her dying in Season 8, when the living and the dead finally duke it out for the fate of humanity, but right now I have too many unanswered questions. Is anyone else going to find out about her true age? How did she develop her powers? What can she do that we haven’t seen yet?

The Lord of Light isn’t done with Melisandre yet, and I don’t think the show is, either.

Chance of survival: 75%
