Since Missandei first appeared in Season 3, her role has been to translate the languages of Essos for Daenerys and to advise her regarding the cultures and politics of the country. This was a highly useful function. However, Daenerys is now sailing for Westeros, a land about which Missandei knows nothing.

Without a clear narrative purpose, there’s less reason for the writers to keep Missandei around, which could spell doom for the little scribe. Take the example of Barristan Selmy. His purpose was to advise Daenerys regarding her homeland. But the writers knew that Tyrion would be fulfilling that role soon enough, so they bumped Barristan off in Season 5. Now, with battles ahead for Daenerys and company, they’ll be looking for ways to make this new leg of the journey stand out. Killing Missandei, tough as it would be to endure, might do that, and it wouldn’t cost them a character of any great importance.

There are plenty of ways it could go down, too. SPOILERS suggest that there’s a clash between Daenerys and Euron coming, and it’s unlikely to be a bloodless affair. Sorry, Nathalie Emmanuel. It’s been real. Hopefully there’s a bigger role for you in Fast 8.

But then again, Missandei will likely stay close to Daenerys, which means she’ll stay close to the dragons, which means she’ll have more protection than most. At this point in the story, she’ll need it.
