Emilia Clarke Talks Game of Thrones, nudity, and being an A-lister

Emilia Clarke admitted in her one of her red carpet interviews this week that she’s still able to fly under the radar, and doesn’t get recognized by fans the way you might think. The subject came up again during her cover story interview for The Hollywood Reporter this month, but that doesn’t make her any less of an A-Lister among the 20-something set. “Being A-List, it still feels like an alien to me,” she says in that interview. “[But] I get to play other roles without the comparison of being Daenerys, which I think is so lucky.”

Check out behind-the-scenes video at her photoshoot, where Clarke reveals one of her most embarrassing moments on set, below. And which A-list level role did Game of Thrones afford her to be able to turn down?

As THR notes, Clarke isn’t the first member of the cast to attempt to leverage her Game of Thrones fame into movie stardom. But unlike Kit Harington, whose appeared in the terrible Pompeii, or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who starred in the forgettable The Other Woman, Clarke’s first outing in Terminator: Genisys looks pretty promising. It doesn’t hurt that she’ll be starring in an established franchise with top billing over Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Clarke has also been savvy when it comes to picking what movie roles to avoid.

She also was, presumably, the only GOT actor approached to play Dakota Johnson‘s role in Fifty Shades of Grey (unless Peter Dinklage is hiding something), which she ended up turning down. “No regrets,” she says, sipping her coffee.

That’s not a surprise considering that the Mother of Dragons, although she had done nudity in the past, has pushed against having to do it in the future. She admits to having been curious enough to have taken a couple of meetings with (now ousted director of the franchise) Sam Taylor-Smith. However, as she explains, “I’d done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again.”

Post Terminator, Clarke has a role in the upcoming romance adaptation Me Before You, which is filming this spring. Then it’s back to Game of Thrones to work on Season 6 “in July.” She refuses to admit how much HBO is paying her (though reports place the total at around $7 million.) In her words:  “Game of Thrones takes very good care of us.”
