Ed Sheeran Campaigning Hard for Game of Thrones Role
If you woke up this morning, and googled Game of Thrones (because what else would you do?) the first thing you would have seen was the name of English singer and long lost Weasley cousin Ed Sheeran. Why, you might ask? Well, apparently he’s going around telling everyone he’s trying to get on the show.
Not only is he trying to get on the show, but back before he was anybody, he was supposedly ‘in talks’ to appear on the show. According to Metro.uk, three years ago there was some sort of offer on the table, but with his music career about to break big, he had to pass up the opportunity. For those doing the math, three years ago, they would have been casting for wedding musicians for the upcoming Season 3–roles that ultimately went to members of Coldplay. Season 3 also had an odd cameo from Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, while Season 4 hired Sigur Ros to play wedding tunes.
Apparently a superfan of the show, Ed Sheeran admits that he’s trying to put his friendships with Maisie Williams and Kit Harington to good use, and is currently campaigning for a role.
“[E]very time they shoot it’s the time I tour in the UK. But I’ve got that time off this year, so I’m going to hound them.” he added.
Like any sensible fan, Sheeran is hoping for the role of an extra, since we know that, unlike named characters we care deeply about, they don’t die. Unfortunately, it’s hard to predict what role he might play next season, since at that point the show will have passed what we know of the books completely. But perhaps there’s a wedding? I hear “The Rains of Castamere” is a popular tune in Westeros, so perhaps Sheeran could learn it.
Unfortunately, Sheeran will probably have to wait in line. Dame Helen Mirren has stated that she’d like a role. Brenda Blethyn, the star of the British series Vera, has also informed everyone she wants on the show. And Simon Pegg is trying to do the reverse psychology jujitsu by first saying he doesn’t want a role on the show, before turning around and admitting that if he was offered one, he’d take it in a heartbeat. As would nearly every actor in the UK, at this point, I imagine.
