Storyboarding the finale of “The Wars To Come”
Over at Making Game of Thrones, the site has taken artist Will Simpson’s storyboards from the final scene in last Sunday’s “The Wars To Come” and broken down how the show planned this pivotal (and stunt heavy) death scene for Mance Raydar.
Mance’s long walk to the gallows. Note the storyboarding calls for several camera shots of the face, in order to give Hinds maximum chances to look stoic.
To me this was the heart of the scene, and not just because it cites the show’s title. It’s Mance making his choice in that final moment to go on and be killed for his beliefs. The picture doesn’t do Hinds’ performance justice.
I know, the Batman-style “THUNK!” with the exclamation point is just great, isn’t it? I mean, yes it’s a huge emotional moment, and–since I was basically about to pull a Shireen and sit there with my eyes closed rather than watch a man burn to death–one that was well-timed. Now, the only question is how Melisandre and Stannis take having their display of authority undermined like that?
