Inside the Episode: “High Sparrow”

It’s time for the official deep dive into Sunday’s episode, “High Sparrow.” As usual, we have three videos from the Game of Thrones YouTube channel, each of which have a different take on the episode: one from producers Benioff and Weiss, one from writer George RR Martin, and one from an actor in a crucial scene. This week’s featured actor is Kit Harington, who talks about his run-in with Janos Slynt.

But first up: Benioff and Weiss talk about Cersei vs Margaery, and though they talk about how helpless Cersei feels, they don’t mention her visit to this week’s titular character. Also in this segment: Arya’s choice to stash Needle, and Jon Snow’s execution of Slynt.

Martin talks about Arya’s induction to the Faceless Men and the religion of The God of Many Faces. To him, she’s already known how to change faces—this is just the end of a process that started when her father died.

And finally, Kit Harington talks about how Janos Slynt’s beheading is—without Jon Snow realizing it—actually avenging his father’s death. His deep dive is fascinating as he points out not only the corollary to Jon’s being unable to behead Ygriette, but how he tried to emulate Richard Madden’s performance when he beheaded Karstark in Season 3.

Speaking of avenging deaths, although no one discusses the horrifying plot twist suffered by Sansa (Wasn’t One Monster Enough?!”), the clip of the week is the scene between her and Littlefinger on the plains in front of Moat Cailin.
