First of all: nice of you to show up, Gendry. I hope you enjoyed your three-season long vacation, although I’m sure your travels haven’t been all gumdrops and roses. To be honest, I was getting to the point where I figured Gendry would just turn up, exhausted from the world’s longest boat ride, and collapse on the Iron Throne because it was the first chair he saw. Then everyone would just be like, “Yeah, that looks good. Leave him there.” And thus, a happy ending for all.

Okay, so I didn’t really think that. But it wouldn’t be all that bad, either.

Gendry surely has a role to play in the upcoming battle against the White Walkers. So far, it’s only the North that’s keying up for this fight, and Jon will need all the men he can get. We don’t know what Gendry’s combat skills are like, but all that muscle definition can’t be for nothing. Not to mention, his background and proficiency in blacksmithing is a necessary asset to any war effort, particularly if he gained knowledge of how to work with Valyrian steel. With the White Walkes approaching, the living could really use a couple more Valyrian steel blades.

Regarding his personal character arc, Gendry’s story is taking him somewhere. His status as a king’s bastard might not seem like much outside of Melisandre’s use for him, but I think it will come into play. If it doesn’t go somewhere, it seems like weak storytelling to mention it in the first place. There’s still a healthy chance he won’t escape the White Walkers, but I’d say he’s got a good shot. Similar to another noble-born bastard, Gendry has big things awaiting him.
