Almería Rumored as New Spanish Locale For Season 6

Rumors continue to swirl concerning where in Spain Game of Thrones will film for Season 6. After spending last year in Seville and Osuna on the western side of the country, this year the production will be visiting the more eastern locations of Girona and Peñíscola. Last week, we reported on speculation that a third location was also being sought out, and that the possible answer was Bardenas Reales Natural Park in Navarre, known for it’s remarkable desert vistas. But now it looks like the producers may have settled on a different location for the desert scenes next year. Los Siete Reinos is reporting that Season 6 will be coming to the southern coastal city of Almería, which has a long history with Hollywood and film production.

Almeria

If this looks somewhat familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve watched a lot of westerns, or perhaps Conan The Barbarian. The Good The Bad and The Ugly was filmed here, as well as Lawrence of Arabia and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. More recently, the biblical epic Exodus used these locations, and word has it that if Schwarzenegger’s Conan sequel happens, it will be coming back to the same location it filmed in 30+ years ago. It has the same feel as the Navarre locations we saw last week, including the dramatic sand-eroded mountain peaks, but with a local government that’s already familiar with the film production business.

HBO has not confirmed that this is a filming location yet, but the local Almería journal has announced that casting will take place in July, much like in the Girona locationsit notes that the extra casting will be done via pre-selection “to avoid the long lines that occurred during the casting of Exodus.” The article even goes so far as to say that the filming period will occur in September this year, which is about a month earlier than the production filmed in Spain for Season 5. With the auditions in Girona happening around the same time, we have a decent indication of when most of the Spanish filming could be happening, so if you’re planning tourism trips to see Game of Thrones filming in action, please schedule accordingly.
