Benioff and Weiss Reference [Huge Spoiler] on Late Night with Seth Meyers

The Late Night TV bombardment continues. Last night we got a brand spanking new clip from Season 5 on Jimmy Kimmel: Live. Tonight it was David Benioff and Dan Weiss’ turn to hit the couch over at Late Night with Seth Meyers.

As you may recall, the last time George RR Martin was on Meyer’s show, Seth asked to be knighted, and the quiz he and Amy Poehler did with Martin showed them both to be huge fans of the show. So it’s no surprise that Meyers pushes to get some answers out of the executive producers. What’s surprising is that, despite their determination to say nothing, they tell a story that references one of the biggest Book Spoilers of all.

See what HUGE BOOK SPOILER they reference below!

What’s really frustrating about this is that the question Martin asks—“Who is Jon Snow’s mother?”—is one the TV show has basically had to leave behind. That’s partially because of their choice (up until this coming season) to limit prophecies, visions, flashbacks, memories, and the telling of historical stories on the road to only a few simple images, like three-eyed ravens, weirwood trees, and snowy throne rooms. I mean, it makes sense from a production standpoint. When you only have 10 hours to get through x-many chapters, taking a 15 minute break to have, say, Meera and Jojen tell Bran all about some Tourney that happened before they were all born is not exactly conducive to plot momentum. And filming visions that include characters locks a show into where it is going, which is something they were not prepared to do back in, say, Season 2, when Dany entered the House of the Undying.

But it’s interesting to hear that answer this question was the key to getting the gig. This is also the second time during the run up to this season that Benioff and Weiss have made reference to it. It suggests that, now that seven seasons are all but assured, they might finally find a way to work this revelation in. After all, they are finally including flashbacks.

Also, I now require a mash up of Game of Thrones and Sons of Anarchy.
