Members of Mastodon Talk What It’s Like to be Wildlings
Please note: This article contains very minor spoilers for last night’s episode. Proceed!
Jon Snow might have only sung “Wildling/You make my heart sing” a couple of weeks ago on NBC’s Red Nose Day, but the members of the band Mastodon know what it’s like to really be members of the free folk, or at least to play them on TV.
The band appears on the new “Catch the Throne” with a metal tune entitled “White Walker.” But contributing to the latest installment of the show’s spin off album wasn’t enough. After meeting with one of the writers (and a few of the cast) at least year’s Sonisphere, they were given the opportunity to appear as one of the hundreds of extra in the wildling town of Hardhome, north of the Wall, in last night’s episode.
According to the music site Prog, guitarist Bill Kelliher says their chance to be on the show was part of a happy accident.
“It just so happened that we were starting a tour and they were shooting a scene in Belfast the day before. So the stars aligned and we were able to fly in a day early, quickly get there and jump into a scene. There was a lot of playing dead which contrary to popular belief is not that easy to do. I actually fell asleep, laying down on the ground with my battle axe by the water because I was so jet-lagged.”
“I did get to sit on the throne and take some photos. That was really amazing. We saw Castle Black from afar.”
Things get a little more spoilery when Kelliher is asked about whether he’ll be returning to the show later on down the line. After all, as we know, being dead doesn’t preclude one from joining an army on this show. In fact, for one growing regiment, it’s a requirement.
